what drives his comment is that the dealer way of "fixing" things on an E32 is just replacing stuff until they find out what was causing the problem. Obviously this is big $$. I would NEVER think about taking my car to a dealer....not because I can't afford it (I can)....but because they have no interest in working on these cars, so they just charge you big $$ and hope you won't come back and hassle them anytime soon. Their grease monkeys are trained for the new cars (most built since 1995), and my bet if you go look, most of them were still in high school (or elementary) when the majority of the E32s were being dealer serviced often (under warranty) during the first 3-5 years on the road.

So, find a good independent BMW shop that has experience with the V12. Not every "BMW specialist" is good with the V12 or the E32, but there is usually at least one in every city who is. Post a Q on this board to get a suggestion for one close to you.

For what its worth, while shopping for my car, one dealer told me I was stupid to buy a 750, and instead tried to sell me a 740 with the original block. When I asked about whether it had passed a leak-down test (signals a bad block, common on the 740), he had no idea what I was talking about. Shows how little the dealers know. I told him he was an idiot and walked out.

Now the bad news.....these cars are not cheap to fix. When something does go bad, the part is usually never cheap. But, usually the dealer price is 2x to 3x more than quality aftermarket parts every bit a good as that the dealer offers.

So, don't worry too much. It aint gonna be cheap, but for the price you paid for your car (assuming you got it at "market"), its a hell of a great car for a relatively small amount of money. Just keep up on the maintenance, change the fluids regularly, and try some DIY work, and it wont bankrupt you. Typically, most say maintenance is $100 - $300 a month, but NOT every month, maybe once or twice a year to the tune of a few thousand$. Like I said, not cheap.

Overall, great car. Wouldn't trade mine for anything. Seriously.

Yes...I'm the one with the brake problems...

Just talked to a BMW dealer service guy about the brakes and I had mentioned to him that I just bought this car and he point out blank asked me if I was rich? they he followed up and said that I'll need to be.

They he made a very bold statement saying that the 89 750iL is probably the worst car that BMW has ever made! He starting listing off all the things that typically go wrong with this car....ouch!

About the brakes....he thinks that it's the 'hydro ball'. What the hell is that? He said that it's in the firewall and VERY expensive to replace. Any ideas?
