The flaps are controlled by stepper motors. Some of them can be accessed thru the dash with the radio removed (disconnect battery & have radio code handy). Some are accessed from the left & right of the console, so you'll have to remove the glovebox, small carpet panels, etc. to get to them. What usually happens is the plastic stepper motor mounting bracket breaks or the stepper motor pops out of the mount & just needs to be reinstalled. If the brackets are broken, they can be repaired with "J.B. Weld" which is a 2-part epoxy with solid filler. Clean & roughen a broad area & apply liberally. If you can work some fiberglass strands into it while wet, all the better.

Also, get familiar with the archives here & on the e34 board (lots of generic info). There are dozens of post results from a search of "stepper motor"

One other note, if the weather's been cold, the center vents don't put out much while the windshield & footwells do. There's a temp sensor in the heater core as well as the outside air temp which will cause the control unit to throttle the flaps to the center vents nearly closed until everything warms up.

Hi guys. First posting so I'm a virgin at this. I've got a problem with the setting on the air blower on my 730i SE non aircon GB spec 89 model. The push button setting for facsia vents has stopped working. Both of the screen and footwell settings are ok. I'm assuming a flap's stuck. Anyone know what controls these things and how you kick start 'em. There's no haynes manual for these and the bentley manual is V. expensive so I'd appreciate some help
