Chris, I had a similar occurance and just like you I tried synchronizing according to the Bentley but without success. Then I read someone elses post a while later on how they solved it and it worked just fine on the second or third try. I can't remember the exact sequence as I sit here but I will hunt that post down and get back to you. It wasn't any more difficult than the Bentley, just a little different.


Background: I left my lights on all day while at work with the car alarm on. This is a 1989 750iL. Needless to say, when I returned I couldn't open the doors, however, I remembered that you can manually open the door on the passenger's side by holding up the handle. I did this, but it wouldn't lift it high enough to unlock. I called my wife and asked her to reference my Bentley service manual. Lucky, my year also allowed access on the driver's side. Great, I'm in. I open the hood, and connected the jumper cables...Yes now I was scrambling to figure out how to reset it. It wasn't a matter of re-entering the code in the computer, not turning the ignition on. Finally I go it to stop, but my flashers wouldn't stop, so I pulled the relay and drove it home.

Now I tried to lock the doors, but the driver's door would lock. So I opened the door and turn the key 45 degrees and manually pushed it down. Now they all locked, but when I turned the key back to the 0 position (to remove the key) all the locks unlocked. This wouldn't stop.

I tried the syncronizing procedures from the Bentley. This didn't work. I disconnected the battery and reconnected. Great, my flashers stopped and all my exlectronics and windows worked again (except the radio). However, my driver's door lock doesn't go down. If I lock it by pushing down on it (with the key turned 45 degrees and the door open) everything locks and I can close the door.

Now the question: What's wrong? Are these components so fragile? I never forced anything, but it appears that the lock can be puched up when unlocked, but it's no going down. I evern tried to lock everything while in the car and disconnecting and reconnecting the negative battery cable. No luck.
