Just went through this on my 91-750il, and ended up being the front u-joint frozen. Even if it is the carrier bearing, the joints in the shaft will soon follow after 100.000miles. A rebuilt shaft with new center bearing is 500-600, as they say you can pay now or later, but sooner or later you will pay.
