Similar to yours, mine refused to start one morning, although I don't recall if it backfired. With the help of the Bentley, and some sage advice from this board when the Bentley left gaps, I systematically went through the DME systems. In the end, all systems checked out, with the exception of a marginal ignition coil which I replaced, and the car still would not start. Out of frustration, and some encouraging coughs and sputters from the engine, I cranked it for an extended period of time. Had it been a carbuerated engine I would have swore it was flooded. So again out of frustration, I went against the rules and tried it while occasionally 'feathering' the accelerator pedal and eventually got it to run at the same speed as the starter but not on its own. I was pumped now!! So the next attempt found me breaking all of the rules and stomping it to the floor and, lo and behold, it took off - not without babysitting for the first 30 seconds or so but we are on speaking terms once again.
Maybe this is like yours and maybe not, but the point is, if I would have replaced everything in site or gone to the 'stealer' and paid them to do it (heaven forbid), I would have coughed up a fortune and would have joined those that trash the car as being unreliable and ridiculously expensive. Stick with it, the people on this board are generally willing to put as much effort into it as you are. Get the book, read the archives and lets get that thing on the road where it belongs.
Thanks for the clarification. I will plan on replacing the fuel injector power relay when I get it out of storage. Hoping to pick it up next weekend and begin the repairs (struts/control arms, tie rods).
I forgot to mention that it finally did start after multiple tries and of course after calling the tow truck.

My 750 did the same thing for a while and the problem was eradicated by replacing the relay that supplies power to each injector bank. For me this was 2 relays. I would assume you only have 1 being a six cylinder.
p.s. roughly same amount of miles on car as you when problem started.
