Which phone do you have? I believe there are two options for the factory phone. One is detachable and is made by Motorola and looks similar to their "flip" phone without the flip (it's Motorola's top-end phone at the time put into their lowest-end case). I think it was the model xxx2000. The other looks like a handset (I believe it's also Motorola) but you can not detach and use it outside the car. Model xxx1000. The microphone is left of the radio.

I can only explain the detachable since that's what I have. You can store numbers by press typing the number and then press "STO" followed by two numbers. Press "RCL" xx to recall the number. Go to the Motorola website and look for instructions on one of their older flip phone for all the functions.

The only differences are:
- voice "tags" you can assign to the preset numbers stored in location 01-09
- "dark mode" can also be set so when it's in the car, it'll go dark after 10 seconds of non-usage
- you have to remember there are two location where you can store phone numbers. One is the hand-held phone and the other is the car's unit (in the truck on the right side under parcel shelf). Programming the phone while it's detached does not mean it is programmed when you are using the phone attached to the car. You have to start a "synchronize" to upload any numbers you programmed into the phone
- press the left stalk to start using phone. One quick tap to bring up the directory. One long press if you want to go into "voice" mode. The voice mode allows you to say the voice tag to have the phone start dialing.

Both type of phones are analog and my local Cellar One/AT&T (northern CA Bay Area) will not activate an analog phone any more.

Hey Bimmer Guys!! As you read in other posts, I just got a 740iL 1994. I will take it to the local BMW place to get the recall checked on the engine. I read an artical on what to get checked and talked with them. All ok!

My Question:

It has a phone inside and its connected to the stereo. When I turn it on, it comes on and when you dial numbers it sounds through the speakers so I am guessing it has hands free. I dialed a 1-800 number and ATT comes on and says stuff. Could I get it activate for cheap, just for emergencies?? I am GUESSING that you can dial 911 and get through even with out service. Its good to have just for that! Can you store speed dials or anything like that?? can you upgrade the phone??

-Matt

PS I love BMW
