Can understand your reaction, Clarence, but as the title says, first, don't panic.

Second, my personal thing would be to look at solutions more than problems - I know, fixing the rockers without sorting the cause is futile, but start from the aim of fixing, right? I don't personally think frightening yourself over replacing the whole engine is goign to help just yet...

OK, being constructive... some things to consider:

1) are the rockers original or could some prior owner have picked up some cracked defective spares?

2) are the rockers chill-cast aluminium (look like sponge-foam in centre of casting, but solid layer around outside)?

In both cases heat from normal operation or bad lubrication on the front cams could have caused metal fatigue and spread the cracks to failure...

I suppose the call is this: did the rockers break themselves or were they broken by something else? The something else alternatives almost all would (to me) dictate a head-pull just to give peace-of-mind that no further damage has occurred and all the initial causes have been remedied... I suppose the worst case scenario is piston-head damage, but it sounds as if the rockers gave out first.

ALSO... must say it's damn unusual to have both rockers on one cylinder fail... if a valve struck the piston for one then it'd backfire (if exhaust broke) or not run (intake broke) but the other valve should have been OK... comes back to thoughts of mistreatment at some stage, did they get overtightened and so cracked or something like that somewhere in the past... suppose the head could have cooked on cyl 1 and seixed both valves for that cyl, but for the M30s that seems to cook the gaskets too...

Good luck.

Max

FIRST TWO ROCKER ARMS AT THE FRONT OF ENGINE ARE BROKEN. ECCENTRICS BROCKE RIGHT OFF. HOW DO YOU PULL THE HEAD OFF ANY THING SPECIAL I SHOULD KNOW.???? ALSO WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH FAILURE???? I USE CASTROL FULL SYN 5W-50 AND DO REGULAR CHANGES. ANY WEB SITES BOOKS OR POST WOULD REALLY HELP ME AND AT THIS POINT SHOULD I FIX IT OR JUNK THE ENGINE THANKS??????
