Here's the trick for removing the transmission dipstick. On top of the dipstick is an arrow; point it towards the steering wheel. From one inch down on the dipstick, push forward towards the steering wheel and pull up. It's off. Do it any other way, and yoou'll be yanking and swearing.

The oil dipstick by the engine is straightforward.

By the way, if you got them off, wouldn't it be apparent which dipstick had the oil and the other with the ATF?

How do I check my oils? There is a dip stick close to the fire wall, that is yellow, and the is a red one close to front of the vehicle. Which is the enigine, and which is the transmission. I know in my van the yellow was always the engine, is this true in this case? 88 BMW 750il
