This sounds like you drive at the treshold of 3rd and 4th(OverDrive) gear. If the road is not perfectly flat and your foot perfectly steady, it will search like that. American made cars do that a lot, Lincoln, Caddy, Chevy.

I just purchased a very well maintained 92 735i with about 150k miles on it and it seems to have a problem with the auto trans when diving at a steady pace of about 40 to 45 mph. Right in this speed range the trans begins "searching" between two gears. If I accelerate past this, the trans kicks down and the engine revs to the next shift point, then it goes away, but if I don't accelerate (or decelerate..) out of this range, the car feels as though it is "bucking" of hesitating as a result of the "searching". Has any one heard of this and is there a way to eliminate this through adjusting the shift points on the trans or some other way to minimize this?? As far as I can tell based on the service records, the transmission was replaced (by the factory) at about 100k miles by the previous owner. Any insight would be appreciated.
