Larry-

I had the exact same problem with my '94 740iL. After shopping around with several dealers and independents and being told I needed a new transmission ($4000-$6000) I finally found a mechanic who would rebuild it. He got a kit directly for ZF (the folks who built the tranny) and it ended up costing me US$1100. Now the car drives and shifts like a dream.

You likely have a little time to save up - I drove mine 2-3 months while I was talking to different mechanics.

Regards,
Jeff
