Call the appropriate state agency and your insurance company. Explain where you were, what you hit in the road, and the total damage. You may have to write a quick letter explaining the details too. (I'd suggest saying you were travelling at the speed limit.)

If somebody were working on the road, and left it in that condition they are responsible. If not, your insurance company may assist. I received nearly $700 from a road subcontractor in Virginia for a bent wheel and ruined tire a few years ago. (It was a nice HRE wheel.) This worked for me. Good luck.
night. I'm leaving the Detroit area, heading south on I-75, it's about 12:30 am, and I'm about a mile from exit 37, in the center lane doing about 70mph...uuh ooh...pavement looks a little rough...OH SH*!....BAAAMMM!!! I hit this huge chasm that crosses just about the entire lane. To call this thing a pot hole would be an insult to any respectable pot hole. This thing should have had orange barrels starting a mile back directing traffic around it! Well, now the freakin steering wheel is almost shaking out of my hand ... I can't go above 40mphs...the SRS light is flashing (I've got about a 150 miles yet to get home to Indiana)...there's nowhere to pull over safely...so I keep crawling along until I get to the exit and pull into the Sunoco station to take a look. This thing has bent the hell out of my front passenger tire and slighty bends the front drivers side and also puts scratches on its side. I put the spare tire on the passenger side and get going again. Now there's a repetitive vibration every few seconds...don't know if it's coming from the rim on the drivers side or if some suspension component is messed up...plus the SRS light is still flashing. This feels like it's going to cost $$$. Well, I know I won't be driving my bimmer up there again!! How do you all that live in that area traverse the roads? My God, you need all-terrain tires on your vehicles!!

Thanks for letting me rant!
