Mine has done that on occasion for a few years. However, the first time it did it, and knowing the E32 as I do, at the next red light I stopped, turned off the engine and restarted and they worked fine. So once in a while I have to do that. Come to think of it, its been quite a while since they stoppped. My wife's Caravan has done similar things, too, fixed the same way.
Of course, if your's didn't come back on it would be a really bad situation. Use Rain-X on the windshield just in case. If you find a solution please let me know.
Good luck!

Yes, the wipers fail then they come back on some time later.
I tried to test this in a controlled environment, with mechanics and friends there ...

... the wipers worked fine. We had the wipers running for over an hour on a dry (and later a wet) screen. Tried intermittent wipe and fast wipe (normal wipe won't operate on a non-moving E32 - they go onto intermittant). All fine. A few days later they failed again.

It seems to be a random length of time later and the wipers just fail then come back on some time later. Is it that the relay is getting too hot? I tried to run the car fora while with the rear relay box cover removed. But there is nothing from the wiper switch at all. Tried the leads to the motor, tried the relay under the rear seat, even tried swearing at them ...

Any ideas for a fix or suggestions for further testing even ?
