Hi Ron,
My starter had just siezed up and I had to remove it and get it rebuilt, You do not indicate if yours is a 12 8 or 6, I can speak foe the 12 as it is what I worked according to the manual it its best to work from under the car, just so happened that I had to work on the a/c compressor and the a/c system so I was able to remove it from the top side, I must say that even with many things out of the way you cannot see the starter at all have to rely on feeling of your finger tips, a tip for you or your mechanic the heat shields are held on with 10 mm bolts the bracket that hold the front of the starter is attached to the engine block with a 13mm bolt the starter itself is attached to the transmission with a couple of 16mm (NOT A 17MM) bolts, disconnect the wires at the firewall junction box, there is cap on it that pry's off 10 mm and 13mm nuts, get the unit rebuilt if the armature is good they should be able to just replace the brushes and the front bushing and clean up and lube the rest.e-mail me directly if you need further help.
Good luck
Fareed
