Well, leave it to me to stir up the pot on this issue. I have a 1992 750il, removed the engine and replaced rings, connecting rod and main bearings all seals and had both heads rebuilt among other things. Upon disassembly of the engine noticed small marks on the connecting rod bearings. This bearing connects the connecting rod to the engine's crank shaft. The bearing is a two piece shell, with marks found on the top shell only. Evidently those marks are from predetonation (pinging) from heavy engine load caused by low octane fuel. Pinging makes your piston act like a mini jack hammer and puts alot of wear on the connecting rod bearings. Based on this observation combined with the fact that I like to accelerate the 4300 lb beast when the light turns green, I won't use the low octane fuel. I use the mid-level. I have 18,000 miles on rebuild with no problems, except the detonating radiator fan which I shared with you about a month ago. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I'll try to get a picture of this in near future.

Hey guys..just wondering what kinds of gas are u guys using on the E32 735i. I read the manual and it says it required 91 or higher. Is it ok to use the special which is 89 octane. Gas is expensive and I drive in NYC usually. My mileage/gal is around 15. Is it abnormal? Anyone can recommend which brand of gas should I use ? Thanks
Ron
