I second everything the others have said.
I had a 735 I didn't drive much after I got the 750 and it would lose a charge in two to three weeks even when I supposedly had everything turned off but the clock/computer stuff.
I bought a battery trickle charger/tender/floater thing from a BMW dealer over the internet for about $60. I believe I saw the note on this board. Its black and has official BMW logos all over it. It plugs in the cigarette lighter and maintains the battery. Just like the one the dealer is telling you about except not built-in. About 4x6x3 with two long cords. I still have it and use it on occasion on my cars or boat.
But I'm sure any trickle charger from the auto parts store for $30 will do about as well. Maybe not as high quality and I worried about over charging and boiling the water out of the battery, etc., so I spent the big bucks. But it should last a lifetime. Mine, anyway.
Good luck.

I purchased my battery 9 months ago from a BMW dealer for approx. $150 and this weekend it was dead. The car is driven very little, it's a 93 with 36,000 miles and most drives are shorter than 30 miles with a long trip maybe once a year (2,000 miles round trip). My questions are, is this typical for this battery? Does anyone recommend a different battery? The dealer recommends installing a battery tender for est. $120 that I can plug in when not driving the car and it will keep the battery charged. They do not recommend any other battery (suprise!). Has anyone had this charger installed? They said it would be in the trunk or engine bay. I've fully charged my battery now and am thinking of having the dealer install this charger this week. Any comments will be appreciated. Where was yours installed, approximate how much, could I purchase one myself and install? Anyone have a source for this type of charger? I use an exide for regular charging. Thanks.
