If 'the longer it sits - the harder it starts' is true, you might want to look at the check (non return) valve in the fuel line back in the fuel pump/filter area (haven't needed to dig for it yet). Can also cause problem when engine is hot since fuel will heat up in engine area after shutting down and if the valve lets pressure drop, the gasoline will vapourize (gas lock) in the fuel rail and starve engine for fuel until pressure/flow is regained.

Check the archives. BMW sells a checkvalve kit that is added inline to your hose. It is $5 (yes, five dollars for a part from BMW...) and takes 10 minutes to install, provided that your trunk is empty.
