My system, that is the amplifier that came with the car didnīt use common ground. The speakers where wired individually to the amplifier. This amplifier does also have pre-inputs. The excact wiring on the DIN-plug that plugs into the trunk-amplifier I donīt have. But I could always find out if thereīs interest for that. These wires go all the way up the the deck and the original BMW connector in the dash. Making an adaptor there could be possible. Iīd really recommend to buy it and not make it yourself. Itīs using a square 8-pin small connector. If you would want to make it yourself, Iīd suggest cutting the white pre-amp wire and putting on connectors, and take great care in insulation/grounding.
I would second Henkka and use the built-in amp of your new deck instead to drive the speakers directly. I believe the factory amp is 4x25W, whereas most indeck amps are 4x40W or more (though not that power-efficient as a separate amp it surely works fine). My deck was wired up the the original speakers when I bought the car. They had drawn 4 speakerwires from the dash to the trunk, and connected to the amplifiers previous speakerconnectors there. A quick and pretty decent solution, as my car donīt have the speakerwiring to the dash originally (because of the separate amp in the trunk)
Couldn't I just use the RCA pre outs on the new head unit to connect to the factory system?
See above... You could with an adaptor of some sorts... The amp has no RCA-connectors allright, but still has pre-inputs.
Check the link below for some pictures that might help. Iīll add my other pictures sometime soon (new amplifier and wiring etc).
