I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with average highs in summer temperature around 80ºF (low humidity) and average highs in the winter around -10ºF (winter lows get down to -40ºF but not for too long at a stretch). Check the link for Mobil1 specifics; they have 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 and 15W-50.

It sound like you live in a relatively cold climate, which is why I presume you went with the 10W/30. Do you know whether, when you switch to Synthetic, you should stick with the same rating?
I don't see that Mobil 1, as an example, even has a 20W/50 Synthetic?

Currently about 1,700 miles into the first change with synthetic. I have added about ½ liter so far. With dino oil, needed 1 - 1½ in 6000 - 7000 miles. Looks like consumption is higher but too soon to tell. Can't tell about the leaking, didn't do a thorough wash before changing so I can't easily tell old from new, also don't have a lift at home ,yet. As far as change intervals, if BMW warrantied the engines using the oil change light intervals, who am I to argue. I just figure the synthetic gives me a better margin due to improved low temperature performance (highest wear on cold starts). As per the practice of a few others here, I plan to change filters near the halfway mark. As well, I intend to get the oil analyzed (less than $15) at the halfway mark when I change the filter and again at the end to see how things are going. I intend to get one done at the end of every oil change and track the metals (wear indicators).

Hope this helps rather than add to the confusion,
'88 750iL

Wayne,

Have you noticed any increase in Oil consumption or leaking since you switched to Synthetic. Do you change your oil every 3000 miles or do you have a longer interval now that you've switched to Syn?

Thanks.

Jason
