I had the same symptom on my E32. The wiring harness to the sensor (and the fog lights) goes through a connector behind the LH fog lamp. This on mine was badly corroded giving open circuit to the sensor. Taking apart and cleaning the connector fixed it.

I recently bought a 87 -735i. Everthing works good but the outside air temp. readout. The readout goes up & down from 80 to -22 degrees setting off the frezing alarm all the time. Anybody know what I need to check? I can't find the temp. sensor.
