Couple of things. First, there is a built-in check for the instrument cluster. Press and hold the check control button then turn the key from the off position to position two (position the key normally sits after starting the car). This will cause the cluster to illuminate all the leds and the messsage display then cycle all the gauges to full range (except the speedometer: 120 km/hr and the revs: 3500 rpm). This will verify if the temperature gauge is fully functional as far as the DME is concerned.

If the test cycles the temperature meter through its full range, next check the sender. Remove the electrical connector from the sender and jumper the pins on the connector. The gauge should register full scale. If it does, the sender is the problem. If it doesn't, the wiring is at fault.

I have a problem with the temperature gauge on my 1990 735i the neddle does not move, i have taken the gauge and fitted to the petrol gauge side gauge of the dash and it works
also checked at the sender unit, I have 4.8 volts at the plug also the sender unit resistance goes up and down with heat of the water. Can any body help?
Also what can you use to clean the alloy trim around the windows the roof line
