I have owned my 750iL (1988 160k miles) for about 8 months and am considering some fairly major repairs.
It drives well and I certainly enjoy driving my car. The inside is in good shape (except for the ceiling lining).
Over the yeras the car has had the following fixed/replaced: automatic transmission, radiator and hoses/pipes, airconditioning unit, stereo + CD stacker, front bakes + rotors. There is no evidence that it had been in any significant accident. I think the paint job had been touched up as it looks great.
I have had the upper and lower pan gaskets reglaced as there was an oil leak (cost me a fair bit). I have an excellent and trustworthy mechanic.
The repairs I am considering are:
1. fixing up the cause of engine blowing smoke- mechanic reckons it may be faulty valve giudes and valve stem oil seals; recently 2 spark plugs flooded by oil (Nr 2 and 6) and the mechanic tested the compression- turns out most were 40-150psi but 2 and 6 were much higher
2. fixing up the noisy front suspension- this becomes most evident when driving slowly on a bumby road (seems not to occur at speed)
3. a few other smaller inconvenient issues such as passanger mirror, drivers seat heater, rear suspension very infrequently makes a knocking noise etc.
If possible, I would like to drive the car for a fair few more years!
Are there any other major things which could break down and thus make the above not worth while?
YOUR ADVICE ON WHETHER TO PROCEED OR TO PUT UP WITH IT WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.
