All a thermostat is, is a valve. When the temperature hits a certain point, say 180 degrees, it opens. At that point the coolant is allowed to circulate through the engine. By waiting to open until that set temperature, the engine is allowed to get to operating temperature. Once the coolant is flowing, the engine temp is regulated to not go any whigher...we hope.
