The repairs I am considering are:
1. fixing up the cause of engine blowing smoke- mechanic reckons it may be faulty valve giudes and valve stem oil seals; recently 2 spark plugs flooded by oil (Nr 2 and 6) and the mechanic tested the compression- turns out most were 40-150psi but 2 and 6 were much higher

2. fixing up the noisy front suspension- this becomes most evident when driving slowly on a bumby road (seems not to occur at speed)

3. a few other smaller inconvenient issues such as passanger mirror, drivers seat heater, rear suspension very infrequently makes a knocking noise etc.

YOUR ADVICE ON WHETHER TO PROCEED OR TO PUT UP WITH IT WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.

1. Certainly something one "must do" sooner or later, I'm afraid it's gonna cost you "an arm and a leg", though.

2. Could be just a worn shock. I was afraid there is something seriously wrong down there but it turned out the front shock was worn so bad that it would make knocking sound occasionally.

3. I'm pretty sure I would fix these ONLY if I had a lot of time on my hands, several sixpacks in the fridge and nothing else to do. What I would NOT do is to let any mechanic work on such indifferent issues (ones in #3 that is) that will likely cost a bundle to fix.
