Yes, that would work too. On one of mine, I cut the outer tube a little too short which then made the inner cable too long. I cut a little off the inner cable to make up for it. There is a trick to getting a good square end on the cable without fraying the windings & I never mastered it.

You know the funny thing is that that inner metal cable is probably available somewhere without going through the stealer and looks like it could be cut with a pair of pliers so that you could pull the cable out, measure it and add a little for the stretch and slide the new one in. I'll bet someone could search for cable on the internet and find it if they got the dimensions when it was pulled. Wish someone would do that.
