There were a total of about 400 735i models imported in 1988, 1989, and 1990 model years, the bulk in 1988.

Standards were available on 735i and (I believe) 740i models in Europe past these dates... just a low demand in the US.

I have a 735i 5sp and LOVE it.

Several tuners have advertised transmission swap services, shouldn't be too hard because the trim pieces ARE in the BMW parts system, and the transmissions, shifters, etc., are the same as used in E34 models. I have even heard of some 6-speed manuals going into E32s but I haven't seen it.
