I have just had my condenser replaced at a cost of £438. I must admit it was done the expensive way via the local BMW agent but because this particular one is about the best I have known in 40 years of motoring I tend to go to him for work I am unable to carry out myself. The condenser is located in front of the radiator and therefore liable to damage from flying stones etc and the only way to check for leaks, after having carried out the other simple tests, is to have it assessed professionally. Other UK air conditioning costs are noted in the follow up "Air Conditioning Trouble Shooting Problems" posted by Steve E on June 13th.
Air Conditioning repairs is an expensive business but with today's temperature of 83F I am mighty glad I had mine repaired.
Best of Luck in your endeavours and Happy Motoring.
