I had the same problem. The gear/arm assenbly that shuffles the cd from the cassette to the head is a very poor design and will break. If you take the unit out and remove the cover and ckt board, you can then remove the main portion of the changer from the chassis by the four screws. Flip it over and you will probably be greeted by broken pieces.
I just wanted to start of by thanking you all. "Why?", you may ask. Reading through this message board has given me all the encouragement I needed to purchase the 89 750iL that we had been looking at for 2 weeks. Again, thank you.

The only thing that we found wrong with the car is the CD changer (I believe it is original). The radio message panel displays the 'Err' message. I'm sure we had the CDs facing the correct direction. We even tried turning the CDs over. And since we do not have a copy of any of the manuals for this car, we do not have a clue on how to troubleshoot and fix the problem. Would anybody have any suggestions?
