Catalytic Convertor Plugged 740iL? - HELP! (archive)

About 2 weeks ago my 740iL was smoking really bad and the check engine light came on. I took it to my local mechanic and he diagnosed it as a bad PCV valve and replaced it - the smoking stopped.

Just a few days ago (elapsed time from PCV problem 1 week) I noticed a lack of power at full acceleration. It seemed to bog down at around 5K RPM and was running rough. The check engine light came on again. I took it back to him and he checked the O2 sensor, replaced 2 fuel filters and checked temperatures on the exhaust. He thinks the catalytic convertor is plugged.

Does anyone know if there is a way to clean these out? I'm thinking that all the excess oil from the PCV problem has gunked the thing up and maybe a $7 bottle of something may disolve the gunk versus a $700-$1200 job on an aftermarket convertor.
