Plugged Volume Control Valves will cause oil consuption problems.

To check if the cat is plugged you can take the temperature on one side and then the other. Also do a back pressure test with a pressure gauge. To my knowledge it is not welded on. You can pull it off and do a visual inspection. It could be either the pellet type or the honeycomb type. The pellet types normally dump pellets out and the honeycomb will be internally collapsed if bad. If pellets fall out, this is not good. If it looks good (the guts aren't in pieces) then you could look into a cleaner. This I don't know about. I have been told gas is not good to use.
