As the failure is new to me, I do not have specific failure patterns. However, the problem happened to my wife yesterday afternoon. She drove the car home and told me about it. I jumped in a sure enough no power to left only. This morning, same symptom, no change.

Now, when I got in the car to go to lunch, the steering is perfectly normal. Not a trace of the problem!? A trusted BMW independent in Houston suggested that it is probably the box or more specifically a broken spring or stuck valve in the box. He was however perplexed that when the wheel was turned to the right of center all was normal in both directions. He thought that a problem would show up when turning a certain direction regardless of the wheel position.

Anyway, I am glad it is back to normal as a reman'ed box is $579.00 (Eurasian) and I was allready dreading the replacement proceedure.

I'd suspect something other than the Servotronic valve. Possibly a problem in the valve body, torque tube and it's connection to the valve body, or maybe a gasket or O-ring blown downwind of the valve body. I'd have a mechanic knowledgeable about recir-ball steering systems, and the BMW/ZF system in particular, look at it.

You mentioned it only fails in the morning?

Mark
