They had about 500-600 hp version available for racing. A sort of "warm up" race in between Formula One races for instance, where the best qualifiers got to race each other in similar M1 supercars.

They had also tuned the engine, I heard the best the M-sport division got was 1000 horsepower from the 3,5 litre conversion with some SERIOUS modding.

It was a middle-engine 6-speed car that only weighed a thousand kilos (half of e32) and seriously less with race mods.

My favourite toy car was an M1 in the late 70's or early 80's. Boy did I play with that car. And I didn't have any idea what kind of a Bimmernut I would become ;-)
