Sorry for the stupid question but how can you read a code without the reset/code reader tool?

Turn the key to the number 2 position and push the exhilarator all the way to the floor 5 times in quick succession. The check engine light should blink out a four digit number, starting with two for a 750, I believe. Bentley has a list of all the codes. On my 89 735, the code repeats indefinately, although Bentley says it will run all the stored codes, then a code that signifies it is finished. Mine does not seem to do this.
