My understanding of the BMW temp guage is that normal operating temp is exactly in the middle. However, I have found that my own car (a 1987 735i) runs about half a needle width over half. It does this in summer, winter, with A/C on or off - it doesnt vary at all. I have put this down to the guage being a fraction off proper calibration. My parents 525i runs right on half, and both engines 'feel' the same temp if you touch a radiator hose etc. As long as the temp guage is just over half like you say, and its consistent, I wouldnt worry. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt creep any higher.

My car is currently running a hair past the middle line about 195 on another website. Is this considered high? Thank you in advance for your help.
