Has anyone ever replaced just the mirror/glass from the driver side outside mirror? I have the replacement part but am uncertain about any unique twists, turns, or just a good yank needed to remove the old part and replace it with a nice shiny new one. I really don't want to break anything in the process!

Yes - I have removed both on my 1988 750iL.
You must carefully undo a circular (large) clip immediately behind the glass / mirror. Push on the top edge so as to point the mirror all the way upward as it will go. Now with a very small screwdriver get in behind the bottom of the glass and you will see notches in a plastic type 'ring'. Use the screwdriver to turn this notched ring (only a little bit, not sure which direction, anti-clockwise?) and the mirror will easily dislodge.
I wrecked my motor assembly by just trying to 'yank' the glass out without following this procedure.
You are a wise man to ask first.
Cheers,
Brian P.
