01) If the compressor lock up one day (soon) what's gonna happen ? (brake belt, have to tow the car??)
The clutch will disengage when overloaded.
02) will it damage the system? should i replace it BEFORE it blows or lock up? (i wanna delay it ... financial problems :o)
running the A/C with a damaged compressor could cause metal shavings to enter your system, clogging the metered openings. i.e. $$$
03) considering that the a/c works 100% besides the compressor, what do i have to change and how much it cost ?
(like labor, a rebuilt compressor, r134 conversion, freon, what else ??)
If staying with R12, you should also change the filter/drier and the pressure switches (if they are the old style) at a minimium. Some people also recommend changing the expansion valve. A used compressor and new switches and filter/drier will set you back about 4-5 bills, depending upon where you locate the parts. Labor runs about $300 where I'm at. If you have access to a vacuum pump you may be able to do the work yourself. I did this procedure on my 750, it took about 2-3 hours to get everything installed. Another couple to evacuate the system, and some more time to recharge it.Gary
