I'm trying to sort out whether or not I want to keep my '88 750iL. Maybe some of you on this board can help me decide? I bought this car 8 1/2 months ago after it had been sitting for a couple of years. I was prepared to spend a little money on it to get it back into shape. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Since buying the car I have spent over $12,000 on it including a $2,500 stereo. Here is a list of things that have been fixed/replaced:
-Replaced windshield
-Had all four BBS wheels repaired and repainted (3 were bent, one was cracked)
-One new tire
-Had all maintenance done (fluids, filters, spark plugs, etc)
-Replaced both oil pan gaskets on the engine $$$
-Replaced all coolant hoses & radiator
-Replaced brake accumulators
-Replaced hydraulic suspension accumulators
-Had defroster fixed (it was stuck on whenever the car was on)
-Had a heater valve replaced because it was stuck open and was heating the air even when the A/C was on
-Installed white face gauges (had to have mph gauges to replace Canadian gauges)
-Replaced one headlight and both foglights
-Replaced gear selector switch
-Replaced reverse light relay
-Replaced upper control arm bushings and lower control arm bushings
-Installed new BMW floormats
-Replaced BMW flashlight in glovebox
-Replaced courtesy light switch
-Replaced door lock mechanism and door latch in rear passenger door
-Repaired door lock mechanism in front passenger door
-Replaced battery with heavy duty Interstate battery
-Replaced heater hose
-Replaced all windshield washer tanks, pumps, & nozzles
-Replaced both windshield wiper arms
-Installed Alpine stereo with 6 disc changer, Boston Acoustics separates up front, Eclipse speakers in rear, JL Audio 10" subwoofers, and PPI amp.
-Recarpeted trunk (during stereo install)
-Tinted the windows

I'm sure there are a few other things that I can't think of off the top of my head right now. I'm really tired of spending money on this car, but I need to fix a few more things if I'm going to keep driving the car. In fact, I'm not even driving the car right now because the A/C compressor went out two weeks ago. :( Here are the things I need to fix:
-A/C Compressor (also will replace dryer, expansion valve, pressure switch & convert to R134)
-New tires (back tires are cupped due to improper alignment)
-Four wheel alignment
-Exhaust (original exhaust is shot due to winters spent in Canada); not sure if I need rear muffler or rear muffler and resonator.
-Rotors are warped (will replace rotors & pads all the way around, but this isn't urgent as the pads still have lots of life left)
-Both front seats need the "twist" fixed
-Temperature sensor isn't working right (this needs to be fixed, but isn't a high priority)
I figure I'm looking at anywhere from $2200 to $5000 to fix this stuff, depending on what parts I go with and how much of it I do myself.
Just typing this all out is making me depressed. Does anyone want to buy this car? It's almost there, I'm just beaten down by it. It is a nice car that needs a little cosmetic work. It has some kind of dealer installed package on it that included the AC Schnitzer ground effects, black cross-laced (or whatever you call it) 16" BBS wheels, and a blackout paint job on the trim (all the chrome including "750iL" logo has been painted black). The exterior is dark gray and the interior is black leather.
