This has got to be THE most common problem on the E32's -- at least from my experience on this forum it is.
What you describe is a classic symptom of the "mustard" relay that's had a few of it's joints come un-soldered.
Below, is a link to a site that will help you fix it.
A mechanic could do this for you for a couple of pennies.

BRAKE LT CIRCUIT ON MY 1989 735I SERVICE INDICATOR LIGHTS
CAME ON. There are no brake and thirds lights.
I check all the fuses and bulbs, they look ok.
Could someone tell me the Problem?
