However I am not sure if I would go this route , with a 235/40ZR18 tire setup you can still opt for the Eibach pro-kit springs that will almost eliminate the wheel fender gap...which in turn will make the wheels look visually bigger than they already are...and give added benefit of actually adding something to the cornering capabilities to the wonderful E32 chassis (for such a roomy car, that is)!
With the 19" setup lowering springs wouldn't be a good idea if it would even work without problems!
If you are onto looks alone than nothing would be stopping you from going with 19" (how about 20"???! ^_^). But if you wanna have any sort of real performance as well, the the 19" is way too big (same probably applies to 18" as well) as the added mass in the unsprung weight will actually hinder suspension performance. Afterall, I don't think we have any kind of metal alloy that's actually lighter than the air in a tire? =)
I HAVE SOME 18 X 8 1/2 RIMS WITH 235/40ZR18 PIRELLI P7000 TIRES ON MY 1990 BIMMER. I WANT TO GO TO A 19 X 8 1/2 WITH 225/35ZR19. WOULD THIS FIT? WOULD A 19 X 8 INCH RIM FIT BETTER ( ie. NO RUBBING FENDER.) WOULD A DIFFERENT TIRE SIZE WORK BETTER. I WANT TO GET SOME HRE 540 RIMS, THESE ARE SOME REALLY NICE WHEELS FOR BIMMERS. ANY HELP APPRIECIATED, THANKS.
