These are driver selectable transmission shifting programs: S=Sport : E=Economy : M=Manual. 'S' mode provides more rear wheel torque through higher shift RPM points and does not go into overdrive (torque convertor lockup). 'E' mode strives for best economy, shifts at lower RPM and goes into overdrive fairly early. 'M' mode allows the driver to shift from 1 to 2 to 3 manually - will not go into overdrive.'88 750iL
The car automatically reverts to 'E' mode when it is started.
On my 750, I have this small slide switch that sits on the left side the gear shifter. The owner's manual has A-M so I'm not certain what this S-E-M means.
