I just traded my '93 525i for a 93 740iL. My 525i transmission was flawlessly smooth....the 740iL has a "hesitate-grab" quality especially in the lower gears (2nd, 3rd). Is this a normal/typical feel? As the car heats up it gets better. Do any experienced owners know what I should expect and feel? Or do I need to rush back to the dealership and demand an inspection? Thanks in advance for your input!

Mine is rough but not as rough as before the rebuilt tranny was installed. Every once in a while it will still surprise me with a kick as it down shifts, especially if I have just made any quick acceleration moves followed by braking. It shifts harder and slower when cold as per the software design to heat the engine up for emission purposes. Setting the shift lever in 4th instead of drive causes the tranny to shift in sport mode and locks out the overdrive. It seems to actually shift crisper and less twichy in this mode, but consistent with more agressive driving, instead of conservative with passenger driving. I have the Dinan engine and tranny shift software, which also seemed to make the tranny less twitchy, but this could be my imagination. I had the software installed very shortly after the tranny rebuild and may affect operation only in sport mode. Like you, my 525 which was traded in on the 740 was much smoother and quieter.
