My '94 740 IL does the same thing...feels like a clutch engaging abruptly and kicking you in the pants. I find it to happen after a long highway ride and going back into "around town" driving mode. I also noticed that my car sometimes wakes up on the "wrong side of the bed"...the trans is abrupt for the duration of the ride. My car has 62,000 miles with a new 2000 engine. My BMW dealer tried several engine management programs. But I believe the biggest change to help was a "speed sensor" replacement. Now shifting is fine 99% of the time.
