Be aware that the sound you describe may not be the valve gear as you first thought, but more likely to be the injectors chattering, this is because the are a form of Solonoid valve. Try listening again with a screwdriver to the rocker cover and your Ear there you will hear the valve gear properly, But I still think it will be the injectors
I replaced mine with new ones and they still Chatter!!! Mine has 160k miles on its clock.

Incidentally the valve gear should be set COLD and at 12thou.One other thing, Yes there is a problem on the top of the M30 engines, at your mileage It is quite possible that there is Camshaft wear causing this. This is Common on High milers and is not cheap to rectify, But IS worth doing.

Hope this Helps.

Hi everybody
I have 92 735iL with 141000 miles. I bought the car about
two months back. I have done a lot of work to it. Starting
with new oil pump, timing chains, sprokets, radiator, hoses, driveshaft etc.But getting to a point. I adjust valves on it twice withn 1500 miles.
(cold .012). It is quiet at idle but when I rise RPM they get louder and louder(engine is super clean, there is no oil build-up at all). Is there worn valve problem? At a top
where rocker arms contact them on that engine with such milege? should I go to .011. Thank you for any help.
