Happened to me also. It was the ball check just as the answer Dano found. If you step on the brake and gas it in reverse, it will kick into gear after a second or two. Dealers will just replace the transmission. I went to Peter Schmidt Tranmission, who moved to Burlingame. It's about $800 for the fix (the fluid alone is $260). 650-348-3990 if you can't find anyone closer to work on your tranny. Schmidt specializes in German transmissions.

My 1993 740il, wont do anything when I put it in reverse. It happened after a 2 hour trip to the Bay Area. Without warning, it is just like it is in neutral. Trans works fine in all other gears. Does anyone have a clue what it could be? the computer? a valve body? fluid level? a loose wire connector? any advice would be appreciated (sacramento area)
