My last BMW was a 86 735i which was an absolute nightmare... wouldn't go into reverse, replaced almost every moving part on it... got fed up and gave it to a charity.
Now, a few months ago I bought a 94 740iL and love it... except for the tranny... mine was slow at first start, like a brake was dragging... then as it warmed up it was alright... a week ago, the entire thing started slipping when in Economy and would work okay out of snow * drive. I took it to the shop, and quotes were from $800 to $3,000 without tearing into it. I went to the $800 shop, and watched as they disected my tranny. Everything from the fluid on up was fried... total cost will now be about $3,200 +! I sure hope this works! Oh, and my car only has 96k on it. Seems way to short a time to need a new tranny to me... especially when I think of my 1969 Mercedes 280SE with original tranny and 280,000 miles!
I just traded my '93 525i for a 93 740iL. My 525i transmission was flawlessly smooth....the 740iL has a "hesitate-grab" quality especially in the lower gears (2nd, 3rd). Is this a normal/typical feel? As the car heats up it gets better. Do any experienced owners know what I should expect and feel? Or do I need to rush back to the dealership and demand an inspection? Thanks in advance for your input!
