The reason that the original washer has a ridge is that the individual who last changed the oil over-torqued the drain plug and caused the plug face to create the ridge in the soft copper washer. Remove the old washer and replace with the one in the kit.

Simple, straight forward (and stupid)question:

As I post this I'm changing the oil for the first time on my '91 735i 3.5 liter. I've accounted for all of the replacment gaskets and washers in the OEM Mahle canister
filter kit except for the copper or brass colored one. I think it goes on the oil pan plug since the one I took off is also copper colored and has the same diameter. I'm a bit confused though because the original washer is thicker and has a ridge around its circumference. The replacement washer actually fits nicely onto the orginal washer so I'm wondering if the new one doesn't replace the orginal, it goes on top of it.

Much ado about nothing I know but I would like to do the job correctly
