Dave is right. I have had this happen on the '02 and mistakenly rebuilt the calipers only to find out the problem did not go away. After removing and cutting open the old brake hoses the cause was obvious. The inside of the rubber brake hose had deteriorated and created a flap inside the hose which allowed fluid to flow to the caliper when the brake pedal was pressed but only seeped back slowly when the pedal was released. Sort of like a one-way valve.

There are two rubber hoses on each side at the rear. One at the caliper itself and one around the differential. I would replace the two rubber hoses on the left rear before rebuilding the caliper. It is simple and a whole lot less effort.

Regards

Alex

Hi all... been kinda quiet here in the new city, been using the bus most days (I know, blasphemy, but no parking yet) and then I go for a 50min tootle around the unfamiliar town (no more than 50-60kph) and the damn rear left caliper is dragging again, enough to get the wheel nice-&-stinky hot.

I solved this last time by new fluid & a good flush out of the caliper; wasn't the handbrake shoes, and the other side at the rear with the same pads & rotor age is A-OK... so how hard is it to dismantle/rebuild the caliper, maybe including a light hone (VERY LIGHT!!) too??

Anyone done this?

Max (suffering E32 withdrawl)
