Tonight (after driving the car for about a total of 30 minutes) I stopped and shut off the car then got back in and when I started it (normal start) and began moving...I noticed that it was idling higher (roughly at a 1000-1100 rather than 700-800). Then about 1/2 way home the engine started surging between 1800rpm and 2500 rpm. I stopped the car in the driveway and ran it up smoothly in neutral in different RPM levels and could not repeat problem. After opening the door and getting out I noticed that there was a large rich gas smell to the air.

Is this probably a vacuum problem (as it was in my E32) or could it be one of the Mass air flow meters (please say no).

Not sure where to start with this one.
