I know the reasoning behind the theory for not changing it but if it were mine, I would change it incrementally over time. If you remove the drain plug on the transmission pan, it will drain only about 3 to 3.5 quarts. The total capacity in the ZF 4HP22 is about 12 quarts. You could spread out a few drain & refills several hundred miles apart, using a good Dexron III for the refill. Even after doing this many times, adding a total of 24 quarts of new fluid over time, the dilution ratio of new vs. old is still only .9, if after a few changes & everythings fine, then I would proceed with changing the filter as well.

Even without maintenance records, if your car was fairly clean & in good condition when you bought it, it never would have made it to 120k if totally neglected so you could reasonably assume a certain amount of maintenance was performed in the past. When new, proof of inspec. I & II would have been required to keep the warrantee intact.
