Aside from mechanical problems (bearings) there are only two things that can or will go bad: brushes and the regulator. Most likely on a 13 year old car its worn brushes. Electronic regulators usually go bad very early or last almost for ever. If possible you should try to get an alternator of the later models with 140A.
BTW: all the parts are still vailable and quite inexpensive compared with an overhauled alternator.
