I have converted many to R134 There is debate whether early compressors /orings are compatable. Minimum, drain the oil out of the compressor and refill with R134 compatible AND CHANGE THE DRIER IF motivated, you can change all Orings also. Then have the system evacuated add proper amount of oil and recharge. Many will whine about R134 being 10% less efficient, don't listen to them and just convert it. Rumor has it that R12 will NOT be available AT ANY PRICE next year. All that I have converted run damn cold and have no problem. Personally I recommend changing the compressor with a rebuilt from local trusted autoparts store About 160.00 inc clutch with a 1 year warranty. IF your system was leaking, it probably was leaking at the compressor anyway. I picked up a used vacuum pump at a sale for 10.00 and can completely convert for less than 300.00. You can convert and take to a shop and have it evacuated for about 35.00 This is an easy Saturday afternoon project. I would recommend waiting till early spring unless it is still hot where you live. Many systems fail because the owner does not use the system during winter months (just a few minutes per week)

The air condioning on my '89 735IL just stopped working. I looked in the window on the a/c line and could see no refrigerant so I thought I needed a can of R-12. I went to the local auto store and was told the no longer can sell R-12 and the only a few stores do now for about $50.00 a can! They recomended I buy a R-134 retrofit charging kit that will switch you from R12 to 134. The kit had all the 134 adapters for the service heads, oil charge and a couple of cans of 134 plus the hose for the cans. The kit is about $50.00 and made by Interdynamics, INC. (model #RKR-5) I would like to know if any one has used this kit or one like it and is it ok in the long run.
Thanks, Dave
